Paying a Canadian GIC from India

The GIC is the piece of a Canadian study permit application that most often slips, because it is the one step that depends on a foreign bank, an Indian remittance and a visa timeline all lining up. It is straightforward once, and awkward if you start it late.

01

What a GIC is

A Guaranteed Investment Certificate is a deposit held with a Canadian financial institution that demonstrates a student can support themselves for the first year. The bank issues a certificate confirming the deposit, which goes into the study permit application. After the student arrives, the money is released to them in instalments over the year.

It is not a fee. It is the student's own money, parked where the immigration authority can see it.

02

The sequence

  1. 1Open the GIC account with a participating Canadian institution, online, from India. This needs the passport and the letter of acceptance.
  2. 2Receive the account details and the exact amount to remit, including any account-opening fee.
  3. 3Remit from India under LRS, with the education purpose code.
  4. 4Wait for the Canadian bank to confirm receipt and issue the investment certificate.
  5. 5Attach the certificate to the study permit application.
03

Timing, which is the whole problem

Allow three weeks end to end. Account opening can take a few days, the remittance two to five working days, and the certificate is issued after the funds are confirmed — which is not the same day they arrive. Students working to a visa appointment date routinely leave a week for all of this and then discover they cannot.

04

The details that cause rejections

  • Sending an amount short of the required figure because correspondent charges were deducted in transit. Send under OUR, or add a buffer — a GIC short by USD 30 is a GIC that does not qualify.
  • A name mismatch between the passport, the letter of acceptance and the Canadian account. All three must agree.
  • Remitting from an account not in the student's or an immediate family member's name, which raises source-of-funds questions.
  • Sending in the wrong currency. GIC accounts are Canadian dollar accounts; sending US dollars invites a conversion at the receiving bank's rate.
05

The tax point

A GIC remittance is an education remittance and attracts the concessional TCS rate above the annual threshold — or nothing at all where an education loan funds it. Make sure it is coded as education rather than as a general transfer, which is an easy thing for a rushed application to get wrong.

Allow about three weeks end to end — a few days to open the account, two to five working days for the remittance, and further time for the Canadian bank to confirm funds and issue the certificate.
It may not meet the required amount and the certificate may not be issued for the right figure. Send under OUR so correspondent charges do not come out of the transfer, or add a small buffer.
It is an education remittance, so the concessional rate applies above the annual threshold — or nil where it is funded by an education loan. Make sure it is coded as education, not as a general transfer.
